What I Noticed

Boulder has no shortage of people who want to help. Students, families, business owners, and community members regularly encounter situations involving homelessness and don't know what to do. They want to help but aren't sure how. They want to call someone but don't know who. They want to donate but don't know what's actually needed.

At the same time, Boulder has real organizations doing remarkable work — shelters, food banks, outreach teams, youth services, mental health providers. The problem isn't that resources don't exist. The problem is that they're scattered across dozens of websites, written in bureaucratic language, and organized for professionals rather than community members.

BoulderNextStep exists to close that gap. It's a practical, community-maintained guide that helps Boulder residents — students, families, business owners, and anyone who cares — find the right resource at the right time and take the right next step.

About Sophie

My name is Sophie. I'm a sophomore at Boulder High School, where I serve as Sophomore Class President.

I've grown up in Boulder and I care deeply about this community. I've seen firsthand how homelessness affects our neighbors — not as a distant issue but as something real and present in our daily lives. I've also seen how often people want to help but simply don't know where to start. A family member struggling with housing instability. A student wanting to volunteer but not knowing which organization to contact. A business owner facing a difficult situation outside their door with no idea who to call.

I built BoulderNextStep because I believe that access to clear, accurate information can make a real difference. Not just for people experiencing homelessness — but for everyone in our community trying to respond with compassion and common sense.

This project connects my interests in leadership, community service, business, and technology. But more than anything it comes from a simple belief: that Boulder is a community that takes care of its own, and that a practical, well-organized resource can help us do that better.

I plan to grow this site over time — adding more resources, partnering with local organizations, recruiting student volunteers, and eventually building smarter tools to help people find what they need faster. This is a long-term commitment, not a one-time project.
